There are lots of good parts about the cooler weather, including Back to School, pumpkin patches, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. But one of the most dreaded parts about cooler weather is the fact that it is so much easier to get sick than in the warmer months. After your child goes to school, you find out that it is not just cold and flu season. There are many other illnesses that toddlers and preschoolers are especially susceptible to since they have weaker immune systems than older kids and adults.
After my son started preschool, he started getting sick constantly and having to stay home from school, since he was never in a daycare setting before. From nursing my son to health back to back, I learned about a lot of ways to treat and prevent common childhood illnesses. Read on to find out about the most common early childhood illnesses and how to treat and prevent them.
The flu is one of the most common seasonal illnesses. According to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, between 5 to 20% of people get the flu every year. Children younger than five years old are especially susceptible to flu-related complications according to Healthline. Flu symptoms include fever, body aches, and loss of appetite.
Best Prevention: Flu Shot
The best way to prevent your child from getting the flu is to take them to the doctor to get the flu shot before or as soon as the flu season starts. The flu shot can lower the likelihood of getting the flu by 40-60% according to the CDC.
Best Treatment: Sambucol Black Elderberry Kids Anti-Viral Flu Care 120 ml
It is difficult to find cold and flu relief for toddlers and preschoolers, since many of the top brands are geared towards children six and older. Most treatments for younger children are for immune support and pain relief. After looking into Sambucol Black Elderberry syrup, I found out about a cold and flu syrup by the same company that kicked my son’s flu to the curb. If your child did not turn two as yet, you can also use Natra Bio’s Children’s Cold and Flu Relief, which has a homeopathic formula to get rid of the flu.
The Common Cold
The common cold is the most common seasonal illness, hence its name. According to Health Direct, children get between five to ten colds every year, due to their weaker immune systems. And children under six are more likely to get the common cold, according to Mayo Clinic. Cold symptoms include runny nose, cough, and congestion.
Best Prevention: Childlife First Defense
This supplement has virus-fighting herbs, such as olive leaf extract, zinc, and St. John’s Wort. If your child is in daycare or preschool, this is a must before they interact with other children. There were times when my child was around kids with runny noses and coughs and did not get affected thanks to this supplement.
Best Treatment: Hyland’s 4 Kids Cold n ‘Mucus Relief Liquid
Hyland’s 4 Kids uses homeopathic medicine to treat cold symptoms and congestion. When I gave my son this medicine, the chest congestion that he had earlier cleared from his system. Only a couple of days after taking this medicine, his cold symptoms were gone. If your child has flu symptoms, you can also get Hyland’s 4 Kids Cold n’ Cough Relief Liquid.
Usually, people associate hay fever with the pollen from the trees in early spring. However, hay fever can still affect people in the early fall, especially when you go on family trips to the pumpkin patch or to see fall foliage. 9% of children experience seasonal allergies according to the America Academy of Allergy Asthma and Immunology. Symptoms of hay fever include itchy eyes, sneezing, and congestion.
Best Prevention: Vitamin C
Vitamin C reduces allergy symptoms as a natural antihistamine, according to Drug Marts. Along with keeping your house tidy and avoiding outside allergens, taking a daily Vitamin C supplement can prevent allergic reactions. Kids like Nature Made Kid First Vitamin C since it has a natural tangerine flavor. You can also add foods that are high in Vitamin C, such as oranges and tangerines to your child’s diet.
Best Treatment: Hyland’s 4 Kids Complete Allergy
Once again, Hyland’s 4 Kids comes to the rescue with affordable and effective treatment for indoor and outdoor seasonal allergies. Like a cold medicine, Hyland’s has a homeopathic formula that eliminates allergy symptoms. If your child is under two years old, they can use Natrabio Children’s Allergy Relief instead.
Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease
Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease is a common childhood illness that is caused by the coxsackievirus. It is especially common in children who are under five years old due to their weaker immune systems. Kids are also more likely to get the coxsackievirus if they are in school or daycare. Children usually get fever before getting blisters on their hands, feet, and in their mouth one to two days later.
Best Prevention: Elderberry Gummies
You can prevent your child from getting Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease by practicing good hygiene at home and keeping your house clean. But if your child goes to school, it is harder to control these factors. Giving them an Elderberry gummy daily can help their body fight viral infections and prevent them from getting the coxsackievirus. Nature’s Made Sambucus Standardized Elderberry Kid’s Gummies are effective and tasty.
Best Treatment: Coconut Oil
Unfortunately, Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease cannot be treated. Its symptoms can be treated with ibuprofen, plenty of rest, and plenty of fluids. You can apply unrefined coconut oil to the blisters to help them go away. Coconut oil has anti-viral properties, so it would help blisters take a couple of days instead of a couple of weeks to fade. Nature’s Way Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil is a reliable brand. You can also use raw shea butter and calendula cream to heal these blisters.
Respiratory Syntactical Virus, or RSV, is a disease that affects the lower respiratory system. According to the CDC, about 57,000 children under the age of five years old are hospitalized for RSV each year. RSV is very common and almost every kid has developed RSV by the time they turn two years old. Symptoms of RSV include runny nose, decreased appetite, and wheezing.
Best Prevention: Childlife Echinacea
Echinacea is a herb that can help prevent cold and respiratory symptoms. Like First Defense, it is a great herb to have on hand when your child begins school or daycare. Childlife Echinacea is great because it is effective, has a great taste, and can be used for very young children. Echinacea combined with First Defense helped prevent my son from catching a cold that was spreading in his class.
Best Treatment: Nature’s Way Enzymatic Therapy Bronchial Soothe Ivy Leaf Extract
Very few children’s medicines help treat cold and flu symptoms. But it is even harder to find a supplement that can help clear the respiratory system. Nature’s Way Enzymatic Therapy Bronchial Soothe contains ivy leaf extract, an herb that helps treat respiratory symptoms. Children can take this supplement at two years old. Fortunately, this supplement is great for adults as well, since we all know that after kids get sick, the parents do too! I can vouch that this supplement was a lifesaver when my son and I had respiratory symptoms.
